At this moment, Micaëla returns and gives José a letter and a kiss from his mother. José is surprised and annoyed by her insolence, but picks up the flower. Offended at José’s coldness, Carmen throws a flower at him. He loves Micaëla, and promised his mother to marry her. Only one man pays no attention to Carmen: Don José. The gypsy Carmen is the most beautiful, and all the men are enchanted by her. The brisk cigarette women come out of the factory to the square. José arrives as the guards change shifts. The soldiers tell that he will come soon, but the girl decides to leave. Micaëla appears among the crowd, seeking Don José, for whom she has a message from his mother. A movement started in the 1960s called for a larger new venue in Paris that would appeal to the masses, a modern compliment to the elaborate Palais Garnier. For years many had lamented the lack of a modern venue in Paris capable of welcoming modern concerts and performances with different acoustic approaches, and the flexibility that a modulable venue lends. Designed by Uruguayan architect Carlos Ott, the building was commissioned by French President François Mitterrand and inaugurated in 1989.
